For the first stage of this project, I created a physical mood board to reflect my concept including various colors, textures, and symbols inspired by Downton Abbey. I also developed a digital mood board, gathering inspiration from films, photography, typefaces, and patterns to further refine the visual direction.
To reflect the rise of the flapper era in the 1920s, I designed the spreads to progress from modest to more seductive from beginning to end. This evolution was expressed through posing, wardrobe, typographic treatment, and photography.
Ideation
Sketching played a crucial role in visualizing costumes, layouts, and typography. I designed my model’s outfits by sourcing fabrics from various thrift stores. After location scouting, I chose the Reynolds Mansion in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, as the setting for the shoot. Photographing on location presented challenges, including coordinating schedules with the mansion and my model, as well as working with limited control over lighting compared to a studio environment. In the end, the charm of the mansion tied everything together seamlessly.
