Jasper Typeface
For this project, I was tasked with designing a working typeface in Glyphs and a type specimen to go along with it. I chose to design a geometric sans serif typeface and named it after my childhood dog, Jasper.
Typography, Publication Design
I started this process exploring how traditional type was written. I used the “wiggle method” exercise to mimic the 30-degree angle of a broad edge pen. Although these letters were cool, I knew I wanted less contrast than I was achieving through this method.
So, I started sketching lower contrast, thick letters on tracing paper. Using tracing paper helped me to ensure the x-heights of my letters were consistent as well as the heights of my ascenders and descenders. It also allowed me to achieve consistent line weights. From here, I moved to Glyphs, where I digitally developed my typeface.
Next, I designed my type specimen. I used bright and fun colors and elements that would grab someone’s attention to match the typeface’s bold aesthetic.
